My dad took me to the range for the first time at the age of 7 when we went on vacation to visit family. I loved going, but it wasn’t something we did regularly. When I turned 16, I started going to the range more often and shot my first USPSA match in 2004. Today, I am a GM in USPSA Production division and recently started shooting in the Carry Optics division. In addition to USPSA, I also enjoy other shooting sports such as 2-Gun, Steel Challenge, Pro Am and bowling pin matches.
In 2017, I organized my first training class with some local shooters. “Baller Bootcamp” was held monthly at an indoor range near me and was successful.
In 2018, Cody Axon and I started a weekly podcast called The Shoot Fast Podcast. At the time we weren’t sure if anyone would listen to the podcast, but figured if nothing else, we could listen to ourselves. Our friendship and different perspectives allowed listeners to not only enjoy our banter, but learn about training as we continued to learn ourselves. Much to our surprise, the podcast was a hit and quickly became a very popular shooting podcast. We talked through matches we attended, how we train and what things we were hoping to improve on in our shooting. The Shoot Fast Podcast ended in July of 2021 as Cody’s professional career grew and he started a family.
I found that I really enjoyed teaching and learned a lot from watching Ben Stoeger’s teaching style. I hosted a class at my range where Ben was the instructor and we quickly became friends. Ben was a great mentor and in March of 2021 a class organizer asked us to teach a class together in Talladega, AL. The class was a success. I found I really loved helping the students in the class and started to teach classes nationally, by myself, with Ben and other instructors. I have had the privilege of training different military groups, law enforcement agencies and practical shooters in private and open enrollment classes.
I have a natural ability to identify areas of improvement and diagnose issues involving shooting for students in my classes. I provide students with corrective action based on their individual needs. As most shooters know, training is not a one size fits all fix and am able to tailor my instruction based on what I see during class.
In 2019, I joined Practical Shooting Training Group (PSTG) as a moderator. That same year, PSTG organized our first “Summit,” which was an invitation only class for members of PSTG. The first Summit was held in Wisconsin and even in the height of COVID, we were able to host members and provide them with three days of instruction. The attendees were taught by ten different instructors throughout the day. Each instructor brought their own perspective and knowledge to the classes. The Summit is an annual event that PSTG members look forward to.
Working with Hwansik Kim (known by many as “Professor”) and Ben Stoeger, I was given the opportunity to start a podcast for PSTG. I host the Training Group Live podcast weekly and invite guest shooters to discuss recent matches or things happening in the shooting world. Ben and Professor introduced me to Coaches Eye and when they are traveling, I fill in doing video reviews for PSTG members. The video reviews are a frame-by-frame analysis of members shooting that they upload to the PSTG site. The analysis provides members with ways to improve their shooting by looking for patterns in their technique. Once those patterns or trends are identified, they are provided with tips and information on how to break the pattern and improve their technique.
Seeing my students succeed is one of the main reasons I enjoy coaching. When I am not busy working my full time job or teaching classes you can often find me at my local range honing my skills. My love for shooting doesn’t just stop at the range though; I host a weekly shooting podcast, write shooting blogs and am a co-author of several books. If you check my social media, you will see I often post full classes and unedited shooting videos.
